The depth of the foundation for the
construction of the Missouri Historical Society Annex was approximately 25 feet.
The engineers feared the earth would collapse and tear away neighboring yards and
buildings in the process.
Thirty-nine helical anchors were used in conjunction with soldier piles and whalers
to hold the steep dirt wall. Deadmen or other systems would not have worked in this
situation.
